Car washes investigated in the South East
Freedom of Information Act Request
Ref: FOI 20-21 18
Date issued: 27 October 2020
Subject:
Question(s):
How many car washes in the South East were investigated in the past 2 quarters (Jan-June 2020) broken down further geographically if possible. Were they all in response to intelligence received or were they initiated by the GLAA, e.g. if any are licensed? What were the outcomes: number of people referred to NRM, number recorded on MS1 forms; any people charged by the police and if so, what offence were they charged with?
Response:
During the period in your request there has been a general decline in referrals concerning car washes, as a consequence of the covid lockdown period.
There were 3 investigations during the period, in the South East. These investigations were not led by the GLAA, who only assisted. The GLAA was not responsible for those investigations, or outcome decisions, but understands that there were no circumstances that required NRM or MS1 notification, or criminal charges. The cases were in East Sussex and Bucks and Essex.
You also asked whether any of those cases referred to licensed companies. The GLAA does not licence hand car washes. Therefore, the answer is none.
