GLA investigation into the Dairy industry
18th May 2009
The Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA) is conducting an investigation into the supply of labour in the dairy industry. This investigation may result in criminal charges being brought. As part of this investigation, we have recently served enforcement notices on a number of labour users in the dairy industry.
We recognise that these labour users will want to minimise the disruption to the industry in terms of continuity of labour supply and animal welfare issues.
In order to comply with the enforcement notice it is understood that the labour users will need to make certain practical arrangements.
The GLA will consider the action of each labour user on their own merits and only take action considered reasonable and proportionate in the circumstances.
It is a criminal offence under s12 of the Gangmasters (Licensing) Act 2004 to supply labour in to the dairy industry without a licence from the GLA. Labour users should only use licensed labour providers to avoid potential criminal prosecution under s13 of the Gangmasters (Licensing) Act 2004.
The list of licensed labour providers is available on our Public Register at www.gla.gov.uk.
